President and CEO Rod Hochman, M.D., honored as one of the ‘most influential’ people in health care
Modern Healthcare has named Rod Hochman, M.D., president and CEO of Providence, as one of the honorees on its annual list of “50 Most Influential People in Healthcare.”
Each year, Modern Healthcare collates this list to recognize the leading clinical executives in the health care industry. For the first time, Modern Healthcare has decided to forgo ranking honorees out of respect for the critical impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the industry. Rather, all honorees will be presented alphabetically with no rankings, apart from awarding the top spots to Drs. Deborah Birx, ambassador-at-large and coronavirus response coordinator, Trump administration, and Anthony Fauci, director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, for their unflinching leadership during these unprecedented times.
This is Rod's eighth year on the list. He has held a spot each year since becoming the president and CEO of Providence. Maintaining a position on this acclaimed list helps to raise the profile of our family of organizations nationwide. Modern Healthcare noted Providence's early detection and comprehensive response to the COVID-19 virus in Washington state.
Honorees undergo strict criteria to be considered for the list. This year's evaluation also considered how clinical leaders addressed the pressures forced on their system and workforce due to the coronavirus pandemic. Criteria included:
- Actions the nominee took in the past year to help the organization achieve or exceed financial, operational and clinical goals
- Steps the nominee has taken to establish or contribute to a culture of innovation and transformation (local and national levels)
- Examples of how the nominee has addressed the Quadruple Aim of improved community health, a better patient experience, lower costs and clinician burnout
In addition to Rod, Drs. Deborah Birx and Anthony Fauci, fellow honorees on this year's list include formidable and revered physicians, like Drs. 1) Jerome Adams, U.S. surgeon general, HHS; 2) Troyen Brennan, executive vice president and chief medical officer, CVS Health; 3) Stephen Hahn, commissioner, Food and Drug Administration; 4) Patrice Harris, immediate past president, American Medical Association; and 5) Natalia Cineas, senior vice president and chief nurse executive, NYC Health + Hospitals.
Rod is the 2019 recipient of the Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award for advancement-based leadership practices. He also sits as the chair elect designate for the American Hospital Association (AHA) and has been named one of Modern Healthcare's 12 disruptors.
