St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County to Host “Reframe Your Brain” Art Event

In conjunction with activities planned for May’s mental health month, the Eureka Community Resource Center, an outreach program of St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County, will host an arts and crafts event on March 21 from 12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul’s Free Dining Facility at 35 W. 3rd Street in Eureka.

The event is part of the broader “Reframe Your Brain” poster contest organized by the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services, is to creatively share messages of acceptance and belonging to those with mental health issues and focus on eradicating the stigma associated with mental illness.

“Mental wellness is just as important as physical wellness, but we often don’t talk about it in our society,” said Brian Olson, resource coordinator for the Eureka Community Resource Center. “We breakdown stigma regarding issues like mental illness by communicating with others, and this Reframe Your Brain activity provides an opportunity to do just that.”

‘ReFrame Your Brain’ is an annual poster contest about mental health, put on by the County of Humboldt’s Stigma and Discrimination Reduction program. The contest is open to all Humboldt County residents and features gift card prizes for winning entries.

The resource center will provide supplies, snacks and volunteers to help interested community members put their mental health message on paper and canvas. This is the resource center’s third year of offering mental health month activities. Once created, posters have to be submitted to the County by April 20th in order to participate in the county-wide contest. Entries will be made available for show during Eureka’s Arts Alive in May.
