About Paul J. H. Shin
Born in Calgary, Alberta and raised in Buffalo, NY, Dr. Paul Shin graduated with honors from Cornell University with an A.B. in Economics. He then pursued his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. During this time, he developed a passion for the process of scientific inquiry, eventually obtaining a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Medicine at Yale University. There, his dissertation examined the discovery and dissemination of surgical anesthesia in the mid-19th century – one of the crowning achievements of modern medicine.
Dr. Shin completed his general surgery residency at New York Presbyterian – Weill Cornell, during which time he completed a 2-year post-doctoral research fellow in translational and clinical outcomes research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. There, Dr. Shin’s work continued to reflect his strong interest in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary malignancies, as well as his unique training in the history of science and medicine.
His research portfolio included risk stratification using next generation high throughput genomic sequencing in hepatopancreatobiliary malignancies; quantitative and ethnographic study of surgical decision-making; as well as mixed methods approaches to investigating patient understandings of their cancer diagnosis and cancer treatments. His work has been featured in high impact journals such as Annals of Surgery, Hepatology, and Clinical Cancer Research, as well as at national and international conferences.
During his time in Manhattan, Dr. Shin was awarded a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship under the mentorship of William Jarnagin, Division Chief of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery at Sloan Kettering Research Institute, focusing on genomic and immunologic tumor biology research in primary and metastatic liver cancers. Owing to the close affiliation between Cornell and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, he was able to secure additional clinical training and mentorship while a chief resident under the supervision of several world-renown faculty.
Dr. Shin joins the faculty at Saint John's Cancer Institute after graduating from its CGSO Fellowship, committed to delivering cutting edge, patient-centered care, whether minimally invasive robotic surgery or non-invasive liver directed therapy with ultrasound-based histotripsy therapy.
