Dr. Swanstrom graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. He later completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Emanuel Hospital and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Dr. Swanstrom finished his fellowship in surgical endoscopy at the University of Western Ontario, London, ON. He brings The Oregon Clinic - Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery (GMIS) multiple honors and awards, including an honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, an honorary appointment to the French Academy of Surgery, the Golden Scalpel Award for Excellence in Teaching and others. He has been featured as one of Portland Monthly Magazines Top Doctors in 2006 and 2007. Dr. Swanstrom is the Fellowship Director for Providence Minimally Invasive Surgery Postgraduate Fellowships and is a Director of the Institute for Image Guided Surgery in Strasbourg, France. Dr. Swanstrom is an international expert in digestive diseases and their minimally invasive treatments - including advanced laparoscopic approaches and advanced flexible endoscopic interventions. He is credited with performing multiple "firsts" in the world of surgery and endoscopy, including pioneering antireflux procedures, laparoscopic and endoscopic (POEM) treatments of achalasia, NOTES, and multiple other interventions.
