About Karen D. Harris

Having long held an interest in human anatomy and physiology, Karen Diane Harris, MD, was drawn to her specialty because she saw it as the perfect intersection of primary care, obstetrics, and surgery. Throughout her career, she has developed an integrated approach to care delivery that emphasizes overall health and incorporates an awareness and interest in the human energy system. She is fascinated by the extraordinary capacities of the female body-mind and by the amazing and diverse women whom she has been honored to know through her practice.

Dr. Harris enjoys educating women about their bodies, problem solving together, encouraging self-care and health maintenance, and reminding women of their own resources to health and staying well. While trained as an OB/GYN, Dr. Harris is no longer attending deliveries or performing most surgeries; instead she focuses on office gynecology where she often offers herbal and nutritional approaches as a complement to procedures and medications. In addition to seeing patients for their well woman exam, her practice addresses family planning, abnormal bleeding, breast concerns, basic fertility issues, female endocrine problems, abnormal paps, and peri-menopausal and post-menopausal symptoms, among other services. Dr. Harris also is a provider in Providence's Vulvar Clinic.

Dr. Harris attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where she majored in molecular genetics. She went on to earn her medical degree from Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. She completed her internship at Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and her residency in obstetrics and gynecology with University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu.

Dr. Harris has Midwestern roots, having been born in Minnesota and lived in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota throughout high school, college, medical school, and her internship. For her residency, she moved to Hawaii, where she lived for 10 years before moving to the Rogue Valley.

Together, with her Japanese-American husband from Maui, Dr. Harris has three wonderful daughters. She enjoys travel, expanding her social and cultural awareness (including through the study of German and Spanish), and loves to cook, exploring ethnic cuisines. Dr. Harris meditates regularly and is grateful to have a medical practice in which she can be of open-hearted service to her patients and the community.
