Professional Statement
Dr. Patel was born and raised in Michigan, and is a mid-westerner at heart. She excelled in academics from an early age, and attended the Honors College at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She graduated in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Biology. She stayed in Ann Arbor to attend the prestigious University of Michigan Medical School, ranked the #6 medical school in the country by the US News & World Report that year. In 2001 she received her medical doctorate (M.D.), and began her career as a doctor and surgeon. Dr. Patel is also a member of Mensa, a high IQ society whose members have an IQ in the top 2% of the population. Dr. Patel’s interest in plastic surgery was sparked by a medical school rotation in plastic surgery, which exposed her to the amazing breadth and depth of the specialty. Dr. Patel has been enthusiastic about plastic surgery ever since. She is excited to be part of a specialty that can not only transform physical form and function, but can also transforms lives. She is thankful and honored to have such a fulfilling role and career. Prior to commencing her plastic surgery training, Dr. Patel gained a solid background in General Surgery at Tulane University in New Orleans. The training included a heavy Trauma Surgery experience at Charity Hospital, providing Dr. Patel an opportunity to strengthen her skills while gaining experience managing acute trauma situations. The other facets of general surgery training were valuable in bringing a large variety and high number of clinical and surgical experiences, allowing Dr. Patel to building a strong foundation for a successful career in surgery. Dr. Patel is grateful for her current practice, and feels compelled to give back. In 2007, she traveled to Thailand as a Regan Fellow with Operation Smile, a volunteer organization performing cleft lip and palate surgery on children. More recently, she has participated in fundraising events for locally based charities that provide reconstructive plastic surgery services for patients from around the world. In 2012 she decided to run the NYC marathon on behalf of Lend-A-Hand-India, and raised money that went towards the charity despite the race being canceled due to Hurricane Sandy. She then ran the marathon race the following year to follow through on her promise. In 2016, Dr. Patel went to Haiti over Thanksgiving with the Children of War Foundation to help both adults and kids on a medical mission.
