Elisa Cruz-Aguilar says she became a physician assistant because she wanted to support patients and provide care throughout their lives. "I chose family medicine because it allows for developing and nurturing the patient/provider relationship and trust over time," she says.
She emphasizes partnership in health care and tries to create a safe space where patients can be honest and open about medical concerns. "My education provided me the tools to know what disease does to the body, but taking that advice and implementing it into daily life, which is the hard part, is up to the patient," she says. "That's why establishing trust and continuity of care is so important."
Elisa earned her Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Born and raised in Mexico, Elisa's first language is Spanish.
When she's not working, she enjoys hiking, climbing, trail running, playing guitar and painting.
