About Matthew A. Powers

Dr. Powers grew up in New England, and attended Boston University for college, earning a B.A. in Biology. During his senior year he spent six months in New Zealand interning for Pharmaco NZ, a local pharmaceutical company. More importantly this is where he met his wife, a Northern California native. He spent two subsequent years working at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, a Harvard Medical School affiliate. He then attended the University of Colorado for medical school. While there, he also spent a year in the Graduate School of Business to earn an M.B.A. During this year he spent time doing research in medical device design. He co-invented a device with Dr. Malik Kahook for cataract surgery, which was subsequently patented and licensed. It was through this experience he decided to pursue a career in ophthalmology. Following medical school he completed his internship at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco, and ophthalmology residency at Stanford University. During his residency, he participated in the Stanford Biodesign program, in order to deepen his understanding of device design and commercialization. Through this program, he and a group of other physicians, engineers and business students founded a company focused on AI-driven point of care ophthalmic imaging. During residency he also authored several peer reviewed articles and book chapters, focused mostly on vitreoretinal medicine and surgery. He then returned to the Rocky Mountains for 2 years to complete a fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the University of Colorado. He also gained experience in uveitis, pediatric retina, and ophthalmic oncology during fellowship. Dr. Powers joined NBVC following completion of his fellowship in 2020, returning to Northern California with his wife and two daughters. In his spare time, he mostly enjoys spending time with his family, running, cycling, skiing, or pretty much anything outdoors.
