About Claudia S. Leonard
To Claudia Leonard, MD, an important part of taking good care of her patients is encouraging them to take good care of themselves. "I strive to teach patients about their health or illness, and to involve them in making good decisions about their care," she says. She also emphasizes the importance of treating each patient with respect and concern.
A graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Leonard completed her internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Before joining the Department of Medicine faculty practice, she worked as the chief medical officer and sole physician for a 45-bed hospital in Kenya. She is board certified in internal medicine.
In her free time, Dr. Leonard enjoys hiking and skiing with her husband and their three children.

Since my husband died two years ago, and she had known him to come in with me, she has been a source of medical knowledge and of empathy. I admire her as a physician and as a human being. Dr. Claudia Leonard has been my PCP since my late husband and I moved to Portland in 1996. I continue to feel extremely fortunate to have her as my doctor and would not wish to change anything about the way she helps maintain my good health, even into my eighties. There are so many positive things I could say about Dr. Leonard, but I prefer to summarize by simply restating the confidence I have in her amazing medical skills, her sensitive compassion as a person, & her ability to explain the inexplicable.
