Doula Access Collaborative

Providence values the role of the birth doula as part of the pregnancy, labor, and birth team. Providence contracts with birth doulas to support families with Medicaid insurance. The program aims to advance birth equity for childbearing families by increasing access to doulas for patients with Medicaid insurance, promoting doulas as an integrated part of the birthing team, and sponsoring doula training in underrepresented communities.

Patients receive two support visits before delivery, continuous in-hospital labor and delivery support, and two support visits after delivery. These services are provided by a professionally trained doula and are covered by Medicaid insurance. There is no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.

During prenatal support visits the doula will spend time getting to know you and your support team, discuss birth and postpartum wishes and expectations, and provide information and answer questions about pregnancy, labor and delivery, and the postpartum period.

During labor the doula offers continuous physical and emotional support in the hospital. Doulas are specially trained in providing comfort techniques such as breathing, relaxation, assisting with positions and comfort techniques, use of the birth ball or peanut ball, and help of the shower or tub. The doula works as an integrated member of the hospital birth team to provide information, support and to advocation.

During postpartum support visits the doula can provide resources and referrals for post-delivery support, newborn care and feeding information, and assist with processing your birth experience and the overall adjustments you may be experiencing.
