About Robert H. Dunham

Dr. Dunham is a fellowship trained general surgeon specializing in the minimally invasive treatment of gastrointestinal, abdominal wall, endocrine, and breast diseases. He prioritizes a minimally invasive approach to every surgical disease he encounters and has extensive experience in complex laparoscopic and robotic assisted cases. He was scrubbed into one of the very first robotic operations performed in the United States in 1993 and has continued ongoing research and practice in robotic surgery, being one of the highest volume roboticists in the North Bay since 2016. Dr. Dunham graduated from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine and completed his general surgical residency at the University of California San Diego in 1995. This was followed by his completion of one of the country’s first fellowship programs in Minimally Invasive Surgery in Kansas City. He and his wife then moved to Napa Valley to start practice in July 1996. Dr. Dunham was the founding Director of the Van Asperen Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at St. Helena Hospital in 2002. He subsequently became the first Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Emerging Technology at the Queen of the Valley Hospital and has served the medical staff there faithfully with over 15 years of dedicated service on the Surgical Executive and Operational Oversight/Surgical Services Leadership Team committees. He is currently the Robotic Steering Committee chairman as well. Dr. Dunham has always found great satisfaction in treating his patients with kindness, compassion, and intellectual integrity. He believes that every patient should be given the same care and attention to detail regardless of their insurance status or current life circumstances. He was given the Champion Award from Operation Access in 2023 for his outstanding commitment to volunteer service. He has served patients all over the world by working in Mission hospitals in Mexico, Honduras, Swaziland, and Papua New Guinea. He also strongly believes in patient education. He never wants his patients to feel that their office encounter is rushed or that he is trying to talk them into a surgical procedure. His goal is to educate them regarding their options for surgical treatment thus empowering them to make the best choices for themselves. He knows that patients do better in terms of perioperative anxiety, postoperative pain, and overall recovery when he has invested some extra time with them during their initial consultation visit. He typically reviews each patient's findings, shows them images of their diagnostic studies, draws diagrams to explain surgical techniques and options, and always gives them time to ask questions. Evidence of this is noted by his consistent 98th - 99th percentile Press Ganey scores for patient satisfaction. Since moving to the valley Dr. Dunham has been very involved in his local community of faith, serving in many leadership roles including Technical Director of Audiovisual and Lighting, and the Elder/Advisory Board. His avocational interests include racquet and water sports, photography, boating, and automotive history. He loves hanging out with his wife and adult children and is quite the film buff. He also enjoys philosophy and thinking about/discussing “the big questions” of life. When Dr. Dunham is not seeing patients, he enjoys playing racquet sports as well as learning about automotive history and photography.
