About Zinnat A. Begum
“Good health care starts with the primary care physician,” says Dr. Begum, “and building a good doctor-patient relationship is at the core of primary care.” As a board-certified family physician, she enjoys getting to know her patients and personally tailoring their care to help them obtain optimal health. With a “less is more” philosophy, Dr. Begum practices evidence-based medicine with a particular interest in preventive care. “I feel privileged to be able to help people when they need it the most,” she says. Born and raised in Bangladesh, Dr. Begum earned a degree in medicine and surgery at Dhaka Medical College in Bangladesh. She came to the United States with her husband to continue their educations at Purdue University, where Dr. Begum earned a Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) in industrial hygiene. Next, the couple moved to Portland, where Dr. Begum completed a preliminary general surgery internship at Oregon Health & Science University. She went on to complete a family medicine residency with the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program in Las Cruces before settling back in Portland. “I raised my three kids in Portland and am glad to be back,” she says. “I thrive on helping my community and making those around me feel happy and content.” She also finds her own contentment in spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Begum is level headed, kind and very smart.. Dr. Begum's sense of urgency and care is unmatched by other PCPs I have seen. I have recommended her to several friends and family members. We have been able to have good conversations about the care plan for my newer life changing diagnosis. While that sense of urgency is appreciated, the immediate response to test results can come across as pointed, or has previously. This is likely a personal issue that I am facing and not a result of Dr. Begum's care or compassion. I recently had a .2 change in A1C result, still resulting in controlled for my age group, but I felt as if I had done something wrong despite the reduction in medication to likely explain the result. I appreciate people being timely, I manage teams that need to be compassionate and caring, while remaining critical- so I understand the pressure Dr. Begum likely feels to respond immediately. When speaking with Dr. Begum, she is kind and caring and understands the whole "me." I'm not just a test result. Again, this is a life changing diagnosis that I feel guilt and pressure to succeed with daily and it is hard. I understand people have referral bias and diagnosis fatigue, and metric pressure dealing with Providence's result oriented model. I fit the bill, middle aged, t2d with prior back injury, and fluctuating BPs and labs. "Lifestyle" is an easy suggestion to make off the cuff, but I feel I have an unordinary diagnosis, or one that seems to have come out of nowhere. Despite remaining regimented in diet and exercise. Counting everything always, I have fluctuations and I don't want to burn out. I am only 35. So the daily knowledge that apathy in my routine and diet can have a greater impact on my future is difficult to work through. To reiterate, Dr. Begum is incredibly caring and I felt seen during my last visit. We have been able to rule out some other more immediately serious health concerns. I think sometimes speed can be an enemy, and that can come from pressure within, and also pressure from the organization Dr. Begum works for.

Providence Patient
She was up to date on all our past meetings. She had some very good suggestions about the path forward and what to expect.
Providence Patient
Only complaints is the wait was 6 months to be seen, I was not able to get an appointment with a natural doctor, and I felt a bit rushed although the doctor did take the time to listen to all of my questions.
