About Heather L. Whetstone
A love of science led Dr. Whetstone to study chemistry, and a love of people led her to channel that interest into a medical career. “I treasure the long-term relationships that I form with my patients,” she says. “Family medicine allows me to care for people across some of the most important transitions in their lives, such as adolescence, pregnancy and the end of life.” While she provides care for people of all ages and genders, she has special interests in women’s health care (including prenatal care), pediatrics, and the treatment of opioid use disorder.
“I view my role as a partnership with my patients to help them meet their health goals,” she says. “My duty is to provide them with guidance and advice on medical issues, but also, ultimately, to be respectful of their own decisions regarding their care.”
Dr. Whetstone is board certified in family medicine. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Penn., she earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and went on to complete her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She moved to Portland in 2007 to complete her family medicine residency at Oregon Health & Science University and fell in love with the Pacific Northwest in the process.
In her free time, Dr. Whetstone enjoys running, baking, and exploring the great outdoors with her fellow-physician husband and their three daughters.
