About Richard J. Delavan
An early curiosity to work in the health care system led Richard Delavan, MSN, FNP-BC, into a scribe role, taking notes for doctors and nurse practitioners in a clinic setting. The volunteer-run clinic where he worked provided care to people in the community who were underserved and uninsured, and the opportunity allowed him to meet and serve patients, their families, and get a glimpse of how health may influence the life of a person and the world around them. The experience gave him a different perspective and allowed him to find that his vocation is to help people and their families when they are ill, vulnerable or even in the best of health. His passion is to work with all ages, have continuity with his patients and include the family as a unit in the plan of care. “I thoroughly enjoy encounters with all ages across the lifespan, which made picking a specialty easy – a nurse practitioner in family medicine,” Richard says.
Viewing a person as a whole and caring empathetically are vital components of Richard’s practice. “People come from a variety of backgrounds and situations that may be completely different than my own,” he says. “During each encounter with patients and their families, I want others to know and feel that they are safe, respected and that I’m going to do my best to help them fulfill their goals, while considering their values.” As he spent more time directly caring for patients, Richard heard their stories about how their health prevented or empowered them to do what they wanted and be with the people they care about most. “This motivated me to want to offer more to my patients and impact their health in a variety of ways,” Richard explains. “I enjoy working with people and impacting the health and well-being of others, while doing my part to advance our health care system,” he says. One of the most important roles he can fulfill as a provider is as a teacher, guide and advocate for patients and their families through the complexities and situations that may arise with their health. A person’s health and our health care system can be daunting, and many feel they are alone in the process. “As a nurse practitioner, my role is to be a teammate, listen, care, communicate knowledge, help others learn, optimize health, and provide access to quality care that is evidence based and appropriate for the situation.” For Richard, the opportunity to help empower patients to improve their health to a place where they are able to reach their goals is both a joy and privilege. “Words cannot describe how impactful an experience it is to be part of a team that helps a patient improve from a state in which they are unable to do the things and be with the people that mean most, to where they want to be.” Richard says he constantly strives to consider each person’s body, mind and spirituality as unique and as a framework to set and achieve goals. Further, it is his desire to create and maintain healthy relationships with each unique patient and their family that exemplifies caring, compassion, respect, learning, self-efficacy, shared decision making, and evidence-based practice. Richard also has a passion for learning and considers himself a lifelong learner. In addition, his interests in health are broad, whether it be preventive care, management of chronic conditions (diabetes), or acute conditions such as pneumonia.
Richard earned his master’s degree in family nurse practitioner/ambulatory care from Western University of Health Sciences, College of Graduate Nursing, in Pomona, California. He was treasurer for the American Assembly for Men in Nursing and helped educate parents of students in the Pomona School District.
Born and raised in West Linn, Oregon, Richard grew up with six siblings and two parents that are still close and dear to him. He enjoys hanging out with his wife, family and friends, along with playing disc golf, hiking and skiing. He also listens to a wide variety of podcasts, music, and likes playing video and board games with friends.
