About Richard Z. Tsai
In his practice, Richard Tsai, MD, emphasizes prevention, education and listening to his patients. "I believe that prevention is the best medicine," he says. "A good primary care provider can identify early signs or risk factors and prevent a disease from having a significant impact on a patient's life."
Dr. Tsai assures his patients that he will always listen to their concerns. He also is committed to teaching his patients about their health issues. "An educated patient is an empowered patient," he says. "I try to educate my patients about their health concerns so they can take charge of their health."
Dr. Tsai graduated Phi Beta Kappa in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University. He attended Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at University of North Carolina Hospitals.
In his free time, Dr. Tsai enjoys working with computers, hiking and spending time with his family.

I've been fairly healthy in the past three months, so I haven't seen a provider in your practice during that time until my most recent visit, which was because of a tender swelling under my jaw that was new to me. The provider quickly identified that it was an inflamed salivary gland which was already resolving by the time he saw me. He explained the diagnosis clearly, reminded me to stay well hydrated even when I don't feel thirsty (as thirst tends to diminish as we age though the need for water does not), and reassured me that the problem did not need any medical intervention. He was right. The swelling and tenderness are completely gone now. And I'm being more mindful about fluid intake. Good service! Good outcome!

This was a pre-operation physical for a hip replacement. Dr Tsai did an extensive review of the Surgeons requirements and asked lots of health questions. I was well taken care of. Also, Dr Tsai ordered lab tests prior to the appointment so I had the results for the physical. Very helpful as I had lab questions which Dr Tsai completely answered and put my concerns to rest.

Dr Tsai is great. He is also my wife's doctor, so some of our meeting had a lot to do with her. I'm her principal caregiver. Dr Tsai was concerned about my health as a caregiver as well as a regular patient. I'm sorry that Providence got into the insurance part of this process, only to bail out after a short period. Jumping from one provider to the next is a pain. Overall though- many thanks.
