About Peter J. Schlegel

Dr Schlegel is a Medical Oncologist specializing in hematological malignancies and solid tumor medical oncology including breast, prostate, lung, esophageal and colon cancer.

He has extensive experience in complex cancer management across all stages. He has particular interest in immunotherapy and targeted anti-neoplastic therapies. He is genuinely curious of the rapidly evolving science of cancer medicine and its many recent therapeutic breakthroughs, with a strong commitment to aligning an individual's goals with realistic, potential real world outcomes within shared decision-making framework.

Dr Schlegel earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his internal medical residency and fellowship at University of Utah. He has practiced as a Medical Oncologist in Washington for over 20 years. After raising four children in Spokane, he has transitioned from a large metropolitan practice to St Mary's in Walla Walla, a more intimate and welcoming community where he can better balance his professional commitments with quality of life.

Family is foremost in his life; he have raised 4 children, the youngest of which will be starting college this fall. He enjoy outdoor activity, especially skiing and spending time in nature; and reading when time permits. Above all, Dr. Schlegel believes the hospital experience should be more than a challenge to endure—it should be a steppingstone toward reclaiming independence and control over one’s life after cancer.
