About Shanik J. Fernando
“My goal as a medical provider is to ensure that your concerns are heard and addressed. I strive to serve patients as if they were my own family,” says Shanik Fernando, M.D., pediatric otolaryngologist with Providence Pediatric ENT.
Building relationships with children and families is something Dr. Fernando enjoys. “It is the most-rewarding part of being a medical provider,” he shares. Dr. Fernando takes the time to explain medical options and information in a way that makes sense to families. “I start with understanding all the concerns a patient and family have. Then, I frame these concerns within the context of my knowledgebase and expertise to identify specific plans of care. “I emphasize strong communication in my practice. I strive to always listen to patients to ensure I understand their concerns and that I clearly communicate therapeutic options. I ensure patients and families feel comfortable working together to make clinical decisions.” Dr. Fernando received his doctorate in medicine and completed an otolaryngology residency at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. While completing his residency, Dr. Fernando received the Gold Humanism Honor Society award from Vanderbilt for contributions to patient-centered care, compassionate service, strong leadership, and medical education. He went on to complete a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Fernando grew up in the Beaverton and Hillsboro area and attended Westview High School. His family still lives in the area. His interest in the sciences and working with people plus his exposure to medical providers within his family led him to become a physician. In his spare time, Dr. Fernando enjoys skiing and snowboarding on Mt. Hood and exploring Oregon trails.
