About Rebecca C. Kirschner
Dr. Rebecca Kirschner is a fellowship trained surgical oncologist with an interest in peritoneal malignancy (cancer on the lining of the abdomen), skin cancer, and GI cancers. Originally from central Florida, she completed her undergraduate education at the University of Florida where she participated in basic breast cancer research at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Working in the field of cancer research became a passion and Dr. Kirschner continued her bench research throughout medical school at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, working at Virginia Bio-Informatics Institute researching the genetics of neuroblastoma and hepatoblastoma and during residency at the University of Chicago working on vasculogenesis and tumorogenesis research. After graduating from medical school, she completed a year-long internship at the University of Vermont Medical Center and then went back to Virginia to complete her general surgery residency at Carilion Clinic. During this time, Dr. Kirschner developed a focus for cancer treatment due to her original passion for cancer research.
Being at the forefront of surgical advancements but also technological and medical innovations in cancer treatment that deliver the best care for patients in a multidisciplinary fashion is what led Dr. Kirschner to pursue a career in surgical oncology. She also understands that providing care to patients as they navigate through the intricacies of cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment, and cancer survivorship is just as important as the operations she performs. By working as a team, she hopes to be able to give her patients not only the best surgical results, but the best overall outcomes.
