Our Approach

At Providence Psychiatry Clinic – East, our psychiatric specialists and mental health therapists assess, diagnose and treat adults with psychiatric conditions.

We work with our patients to develop a personalized care plan that best suits their needs. We know our patients may feel fragile when they come to us. That’s why we offer compassionate care and understanding in a healing environment.

Our goal is to support patients so they can return to their primary care team for ongoing care. Treatment plans may include medication management, therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or esketamine for treatment-resistant depression.

We treat adults who need psychiatric care but don't need to be seen more than once a week. If a higher level of care is needed, we’ll help find a placement that’s more appropriate.

Please note: We don’t treat patients who need intensive outpatient services or long-term mental health care. Additionally, we don’t provide treatment for children, chemical dependency or eating disorders.

Our Services

Our psychiatric specialists work closely with patients to provide different therapies that will best support emotional stability and recovery. They help manage medication changes and explore innovative treatments like TMS or esketamine.

There are many medication options for treating psychiatric conditions. Our experts work to find the most effective medication for each patient’s needs, at every stage of life.

We offer both individual and group therapy through our innovative patient-centered program. Our programs are built on the Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) model of care.

This highly effective, evidence-based approach incorporates mindfulness and encourages patients to move forward with their lives while also acknowledging and accepting inner feelings they may struggle with.

Esketamine is a nasal spray therapy that can help adult patients with treatment-resistant depression. Esketamine, a derivative of the anesthesia drug ketamine, has been found to offer antidepressant benefits.

Patients may be considered for this therapy if they have major depressive disorder (MDD) and haven’t responded to antidepressant medications or psychotherapy/talk therapy.

TMS is a non-invasive therapy for patients who have medication-resistant depression.

During treatment, a specialized coil is placed onto the head for approximately 20-30 minutes. The coil sends gentle, highly targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate activity in the left prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain that is associated with mood.

Patients can resume normal activities immediately following the treatment session.

Esketamine: FDA-Approved for Treatment-Resistant Depression

Esketamine is a breakthrough nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression. Esketamine may be a good fit for patients if standard medication and/or talk therapy are no longer working.

When taken alongside an oral antidepressant, esketamine has been proven effective to reduce symptoms of depression. Treatments are administered in-office under supervision.

No, esketamine may not work for everyone. Esketamine has the most success when prescribed to an adult with major depressive disorder who has previously tried at least two different anti-depressants and attempted talk therapy. It’s also most effective when the patient is taking oral anti-depressants in addition to esketamine.

Patients with the following medical considerations aren’t good candidates for esketamine:

  • Aneurysmal vascular disease, including thoracic and abdominal aorta, intracranial and peripheral arterial vessels
  • Arteriovenous malformation
  • Cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular conditions and risk factors where transient hypertension would place the patient at risk of serious harm
  • Psychiatric conditions, including:
    • Bipolar 1
    • Borderline personality disorder and other character pathology
    • Current significant substance abuse
    • History of psychosis

Esketamine is a FDA-approved nasal spray treatment. Since it’s a ketamine derivative, which is a controlled substance, the treatments are given in-office under the supervision of a doctor. However, you’ll be allowed to administer the spray yourself.

You’ll need to arrange a ride to and from each visit in advance, as you won’t be able to drive right after the appointment. You can resume driving after a full night’s sleep.

Patients will be monitored in the office for two hours following each treatment session.

Esketamine consists of 12 treatments over eight weeks:

  • During the first four weeks, you’ll typically receive two nasal spray treatments per week.
  • During the following four weeks, you’ll typically receive one nasal spray treatment per week.

Not all insurance plans cover esketamine. It’s always best to check with your insurance provider before scheduling an appointment.
