Peripheral Nerve Services
Peripheral Nerve Services
Providence Peripheral Nerve Services gives patients access to expert clinical evaluations and treatment for neuromuscular diseases. A select group of dedicated physicians specially trained in the care of these diseases leads our team.
These specialists conduct electromyography studies; nerve conduction studies; and quantitative sudomotor axon reflex testing, which evaluates autonomic nerve function. They do skin biopsies to diagnose small fiber neuropathy. They work in close collaboration with other specialty providers who often participate in the evaluation and care of our patients. These other specialists include hand surgeons, spine surgeons, rheumatologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists.

Peripheral nerve disorders are also referred to as peripheral neuropathies. These disorders occur when either the nerves located outside of your brain and spinal cord are damaged, or the nerve impulses traveling through your arms or legs from the brain and spinal cord to your skin and muscles are interrupted.
Many diseases and disorders can trigger peripheral nerve dysfunction, including diabetes, viral infections, immunological disorders, nerve compressions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, and injury or trauma. Peripheral nerve and muscle diseases also can be inherited.
Symptoms often start gradually, and can worsen. You may experience numbness, pain, burning, tingling, muscle weakness or sensitivity to touch. Our specialty physicians are experts in the evaluation and care of these problems.
