Caregivers provide the best care when they can get the support they need.
Providence caregivers have access to resources, including mental health support, referral bonuses and education stipends, to ensure Providence provides the most positive environment for patients.
Health care innovations often come with discussions of technology or treatments. However, those innovations – and their delivery – would not be possible without people. No one understands that more than Greg Till, chief people officer at Providence.
“I aspire to cultivate an inspiring culture where caregivers are rewarded and recognized for their contributions, feel a strong sense of inclusion and belonging, and are connected to a higher purpose, aligned with their calling,” Greg says.
That work has paid off. Greg was named to Human Resource Executive’s HR Honor Roll for 2022, and first runner-up to the publication’s HR Executive of the Year Award. Greg and the Providence HR team have spent the last two years of the global pandemic investing in ways to support the caregivers who enable Providence to provide the best care to patients.
Enabling caregivers to be their best
In the past two years, health care workers have felt the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many (if not most) experiencing some degree of burnout. Greg recognized that Providence needed to find ways to reduce the stressors that can lead to burnout for Providence’s caregivers.
Greg and his team led efforts to bring new technology and career development resources to ease work processes. They also thought of ways to support mental health – regardless of where caregivers are. Those resources included additional time off, leaves of absence and free behavioral health visits.
Investing in people
Beyond making sure caregivers can be at their best, Greg and his team wanted to ensure Providence continued to be a great place to work with its investment in caregivers. That included a bonus for all caregivers (director level or lower) during the pandemic.
It also meant a drive to support caregiver education, which includes more than $5,000 in education reimbursement, as well as support to make certifications either low-cost or free. Additionally, Greg’s team is working with managers to build career paths for current employees that lead to promotions and higher pay.
Under Greg’s leadership the HR team also implemented a referral bonus for all positions to encourage caregiver participation in filling open roles with trusted friends, family members and former colleagues. This bonus not only financially benefits caregivers but also supports Providence’s culture with new hires who align with the Mission.
Building the workforce of the future
Even with these efforts, Greg and his team recognized that the looming workforce crisis in health care, as well as continuous national attrition from the pandemic, meant that keeping current caregivers engaged at Providence was more important than ever. Despite these challenges, the Providence family of organizations saw its lowest levels of attrition ever in 2021.
While Greg and his team aim to inspire, develop, and enable today’s workforce, they also have an eye to the future. With clinical and operational leaders, the HR team has focused on “the 4 Ds of Transformation,” focused on Deconstructing work to add capacity and bring joy back, Digitizing processes to streamline and simplify, Deploying caregivers to their highest and best use, and Diversifying sources of talent to expand the talent pool.
“We need to design work and develop the workforce differently, so we’re able to continue providing exceptional care 15 years from now,” Greg says. “Together, we can bring the future to the present and deliver health for a better world.”
