Providence Swedish acquires Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology

Growing the Providence Swedish comprehensive women’s health care program in the South Puget Sound, to bring the highest level of specialty services for women in our community.

PROVIDENCE SWEDISH SOUTH PUGET SOUND – Providence Swedish and Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology, PLLC, have been exploring opportunities to work more collaboratively to better serve our patients and improve the overall health of those we serve. It was announced June 1, 2023, that Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology will become an employed specialty practice of Providence Swedish under the name: Providence Swedish Obstetrics and Gynecology Olympia.

“We are thrilled to strengthen the relationship between Providence Swedish and the clinicians of the former Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology. They have a long-standing reputation within our community with high marks on patient satisfaction and quality. This acquisition will be the cornerstone on how we grow our comprehensive women’s health care program,” says Darin Goss Chief Executive Providence Swedish South Puget Sound

By working in an employed specialty practice model, Providence Swedish Obstetrics and Gynecology Olympia, partnering with Providence Women’s Center in Centralia and our women’s specialty services including urogynecology and gynecological oncology, will be able to ensure the local community has access to the highest level of specialty services for women. As health care changes in our country, it is becoming more difficult for independent physician practices to recruit and grow their services. Together Providence Swedish Obstetrics and Gynecology Olympia will work to recruit OBGYN physicians and will continue to look at avenues to grow the breadth of services.

Our Mission and vision aligned, leading us to our decision to work in an employed specialty practice model. Together, we will be able to ensure that our community has access to the highest level of specialty services for women for years to come,” says Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology physician Laurie Sorenson, M.D., who serves as Medical Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Providence St. Peter Hospital.

As the organizations join together, patients and the community can be assured that none of the procedures currently performed by the physicians/clinicians at Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology will be affected by this transaction

Olympia Obstetrics & Gynecology, PLLC formed with the closure of Memorial Clinic in 2001. Laurie Sorenson, the remaining founding partner, has provided care in the community for more than 25 years. She was instrumental in developing a group practice shared obstetrical model, as well as bringing in new partners and associates to the practice. Darrel Bell, MD, has been with the group since 2007. He played an active role in the development of the gynecologic robotic assisted surgical program at St. Peter Hospital. Due to the high demand for obstetric and gynecological services in the Olympia area – the partners brought in midwifery support to the office in 2010. Certified Nurse Midwives include Sharon Hinz, Karen Swift, Carie Bussey, Amanda Clauson, Katie Wodaege, and Tiffany Heiges. Anita Chin, MD and Puneet Bhullar, MD, joined the group in 2017 furthering the group’s dedication of service to the community.

At any given time, the clinicians at the former Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology practice care for 700 pregnant patients who are seen for multiple visits over an eight-month time frame. In the newly formed Providence Swedish Obstetrics and Gynecology Olympia practice, they will continue to address well woman care, gynecological problems, diagnostic appointments, as well as gynecological services utilizing both laparoscopic and robotic assisted approaches.
