About Stephen M. Mitchell
As a college student, Stephen Mitchell, D.O., volunteered in both the emergency and operating room, and also worked in the dementia unit of a nursing home. “The personal connections I formed with these patients, combined with my love of biology and the intricacies of the human body led me to pursue a career in medicine,” Dr. Mitchell says. During his residency, he became inspired by his endocrinology patients and was fascinated with learning about the diversity and complexity of their endocrine conditions.
In his practice, Dr. Mitchell enjoys seeing patients with a wide variety of endocrine problems. Particular areas of interest include diabetes, thyroid disease, and osteoporosis. He also likes performing thyroid nodule biopsies. “My goal is to empower my patients with knowledge about their medical condition and provide them with empathic and compassionate care so they can be successful in improving their health,” he says. Dr. Mitchell enjoys learning about his patients and forming long-lasting relationships with them. The more he knows about them as individuals, the better he is at helping them live healthier lives. “I believe that collaboration and teamwork between physician and patient is key to helping my patients better understand and care for their medical problems,” Dr. Mitchell adds.
Dr. Mitchell earned his medical degree from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Providence Portland Medical Center, as well as an endocrinology fellowship at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
Born in California, Dr. Mitchell lived in Washington and Arizona while growing up. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, two children, their cat, and two dogs. He loves reading mystery and crime novels, running, camping, and watching USC football.

As always, Dr. Mitchell was well informed with updates on my blood pressure and adrenal gland issues. He also told me about some changes and a new medication in adrenal gland care. One of the things l like best about him, is that I can ask him questions outside his main area of concern and he will answer them. I am lucky to be his patient.
