About Shi-Wei Samuel S. Hwu
As a primary care sports medicine physician, Dr. Hwu cares for athletes and active individuals from all types of backgrounds. He sincerely enjoys getting to know his patients and partnering with them to achieve their personal health goals. “I take a holistic approach to care, considering my patients’ physical, mental and emotional well-being,” he says. “My most important role is to ensure that each patient is heard and seen.”
A graduate of Duke University, Dr. Hwu attended the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Tufts University Family Medicine Residency at Cambridge Health Alliance, and a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University – Fairfax Family Practice.
Dr. Hwu has extensive experience in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sports-related injuries and illnesses, and in the management of chronic medical conditions in athletes of all levels. He is board certified in family medicine and in sports medicine, and is registered in musculoskeletal sonography (RMSK).

I believe Dr.Hwu went above and beyond his normal duty for patient care for me, I was having a very difficult time scheduling my regular Pet Scan. Apparently, my chart was flagged because without me even contacting me he Intervned and became my advocate between my Insurance and the hospital.I had been attempting to schedule a Pet Scan for literally months. Since April I had contacted the scheduling office at St. Vincents twelve times, and finally being told that I had been denied. That's when Dr. Hwu stepped In, coordinated a 3-way conference call with the head of the Insurance approval team. We were In Dr. Hwu's Office and Informed her of the situation.Clearly, once she understood that this was a part of my ongoing care and that I had been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer In 2021, she took her newly gained information and took my case before the approval board and I was approved the next day! I want to thank Dr. Hwu for going above and beyond his scope of duty as my medical doctor! His care and absolute kindness will never be forgotten.
