About Riley Grogan
Dr. Riley Grogan, MD was raised in Polson, MT and attended Carroll College in Helena, MT for his undergraduate training. Upon graduating from Carroll, he was commissioned as a Medical Corp officer in the United States Army as a Distinguished Military Graduate, and he is proud to continue serving alongside the wonderful soldiers of the Montana Army National Guard to this day. He went on to attend the University of Washington School of Medicine (Montana WWAMI Program) as a Targeted Rural and Underserved Tract (TRUST) Scholar, participating in both the Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP) and the WWAMI Rural Integrated Training Experience (WRITE) Program. After graduating from medical school, he completed his General Surgery Residency at Gundersen Health System, a rural-focused, broad-spectrum residency program based in La Crosse, WI. While at Gundersen, he had the privilege of receiving a scholarship to be a visiting Senior Registrar at a hospital system in Kijabe, Kenya. He notes this experience further ignited his passion for providing complex surgical care in rural, austere and under-resourced environments. After graduating from residency, he pursued a Surgical Critical Care/Trauma fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, where he was able to gain additional expertise in minimally invasive surgery, chest wall reconstruction and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Dr. Grogan is ecstatic to be back in the mountains of Montana, practicing general, trauma and acute care surgical services in Missoula. His passion for medicine is fueled by the opportunity to have a profound positive impact on patients, particularly in their most challenging and vulnerable moments. He is dedicated to exemplary patient outcomes and quality care with strong emphasis on interprofessional collaboration. Blending humility, compassion, empathy and surgical expertise, Dr. Grogan supports patients beyond just the physical aspects of recovery to prioritize the emotional wellbeing of his patients and their ability to return to an active, fulfilling life post-recovery. In his free time, Riley enjoys spending time with his loving wife and young son, as well as spending time outdoors fly fishing, skiing, running, swimming, hunting and hiking.
