About Joshua J. Kim
“I like to explain and lay out the best options available from a medical perspective, hear the child’s and their family's concerns and desires, and together arrive at the most reasonable, and of course medically sound decision,” says pediatric neurologist Joshua Kim, M.D. “I see my role as a provider to be a counselor, adviser or consultant.”
Dr. Kim especially enjoys working with patients and their families. “I think it's very important to be on the same page with the patient and the patient's family when it comes to diagnosis, treatment and management,” he says. “There has to be a level of comfort and knowledge about the diagnosis and medical care, for often the success of a plan is largely dependent on this. I like to spend time on patient and family education, making every effort to be as clear as possible about the diagnosis and plan of action. “Under my care, I will be your unwavering and unfailing advocate.” Understanding how the brain works is deeply gratifying and a real pleasure for Dr. Kim to continue studying. “The brain is, I think, the most fascinating and most complex thing not only in our own bodies, but also compared to anything else in the whole universe! Perhaps the only other thing more gratifying is to be in a position to help kids with neurologic conditions such as epilepsy, and that is really cool.” Dr. Kim has lived in a variety of places; he was born in South Korea, grew up in Southern California, went to school in the Midwest and is thankful to now be in Portland. To relax, Dr. Kim listens to Gregorian chants and eats fruit each morning. He enjoys seeing and learning new things.

He is always caring about her health at all times. The only reason I wouldn't recommend him, is most people I know don't need a pediatric neurologist.

We are so grateful for having providence for our health needs

Dr. Kim is excellent at thoughtfully considering his word choice before fully constructing a sentence. It appears he has every desire to represent the child and situation with extreme accuracy. He is kind in his delivery of information in that he doesn't elaborate or offer false hope or use ambiguous language. We appreciate his communication style and his effort put into it.

Took his time with our daughter, clearly listened, and helped us come up with a next plan of action to figure out what's wrong with our daugter.

Dr Kim is always thoughtful and caring with regard to the care of our children. He is patient and listens to our concerns, and addresses them. He doesn't jump to conclusions and doesn't group our children in with the masses when making recommendations about the type of care that is needed. He is not afraid to do the work necessary to help our children, whereas other specialists at Providence seem to regurgitate information out of a text book and are quick to make generalizations. As a majority, providers are failing, but Dr Kim is in the minority because he truly seems to care deeply about his patients

Dr. Kim is the epileptologist who cared for our son in the last 4 years. The kid has intractable epilepsy and had failed a couple of medications when we first saw him. Thanks to Dr. Kim's knowledge, availability, and relentless care, we managed to control seizures completely - twice (there was an onset of new seizure types last year). I also appreciate the fact that Dr. Kim was very diligent in striving to understand what causes my kid's seizures. We used all resources available - blood tests, genetic tests, diagnostic imaging, referral to a reference hospital for potential brain surgery. Overall, we've had a great experience with him throughout this time. We'll definitely miss him as we leave the US.
