About Patrick R. Maloney

Dr. Maloney is a board-certified neurosurgeon and the Medical Director of Neurosurgery for UCSF Napa at Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center. He also serves as Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery at UCSF, where he participates in the UCSF Neurosurgery Network as the North Bay Area Regional Medical Director. He grew up in the region and is a long-term Northern California resident. He earned his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. He went on to neurosurgery residency training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. After residency, he completed active-duty service commitments to the U.S. Air Force, where he served as an active-duty neurosurgeon, deploying to Afghanistan under Operation Freedom's Sentinel (OFS). After honorable separation, he maintains strong ties with the veteran, active-duty and retiree communities, assisting the VA Northern California region with neurosurgical services. After his military service, he completed additional fellowship training in complex spine disorders under the mentorship of Drs. Chris Ames and Aaron Clark at UCSF. He strives to bring cutting-edge neurosurgical treatments from the academic hospital into community settings. His personal care philosophy mirrors the core values of his training, "The needs of the patient come first." When the needs of the patient are prioritized through integrated care, research, and education, this is the recipe for the best possible outcomes. Values that focus on patient-centered care include respect, compassion, and collaboration—these are essential when managing complex cases. He has a clinical focus in complex spinal disorders, traumatic brain injuries and general neurosurgery. His surgical spine care includes non-operative as well as both minimally invasive and open techniques for spinal deformities. He has published over 35 peer reviewed articles and participates in regular academic teaching conferences as both a faculty instructor and speaker. He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), San Franciso Neurological Society (SFNS) and the California Associate of Neurological Surgeons (CANS). Outside of professional activities, he enjoys spending time with his family, as well as travel, reading and almost all active outdoor sporting activities.
