About Karen E. Evensen
Dr. Karen Evensen is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in hip and knee disorders. She treats the full spectrum of lower extremity orthopedic issues, from athletic hip or knee injuries to advanced arthritis requiring hip or knee replacement surgery.
A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, she completed an Orthopedic residency at the University of Iowa. She went on to complete dual fellowship training: a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Oncology at the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by a fellowship in Joint Reconstruction through the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.
Dr. Evensen focuses on customizing patient care, ranging from conservative management options --such as lifestyle changes, structured physical therapy, and joint injections-- through surgical management. A good provider allows sufficient time to not only answer questions about a powerful drug that has been prescribed, but also to respectfully listen to concerns within the context of a conversation. The 15-min allotment does not allow for this & there's no where else to turn but the internet or an integrative dr outside of the system. Patients today are well-read & open to alternative treatment that is not always encapsulated in a prescription drug that they feel pressured to take.Where in this system can this be found? A short consultation with a new specialist would give the dr an opportunity to state how he/she approaches the health issue & for the perspective patient to decide if this partnership will allow for mutual concerns to be expressed.Having to wait weeks for appts to interview each dr (or trained staff) could take months. Unfortunately, personnel answering the phones typically can't answer these types of general questions, or this would save a lot of time for the dr as well as the patient before one commits to making an appt.Friends in other states have found drs who are more open-minded about options for treatment & are willing to support the decision the patient has made without severing the relationship. I will continue my search.

Karen Evenson is a wonderful doctor. She was also my hip replacement physician. Now my bone doctor since I recently had a fracture on my L1 spine.

My appointment with Dr.Evensen was great, as usual. I did have to wait over 30 minutes for my scheduled post-op hip xray (scheduled for 10:15 prior to my 11:15 appointment with Dr.Evensen). I do understand that emergency situations do occur that can affect the scheduling.
