About Jeffrey S. Zarin

Jeffrey S. Zarin, M.D., has been passionate about science and medicine from early in his life. In college at Amherst in Massachusetts he majored in Biology and then attended medical school at Stanford University. He followed with an internship and residency in Orthopedic surgery at Harvard University Medical School. He then completed a fellowship in joint replacement surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He has practiced as an orthopedic surgeon since 2007.

When he chose joint replacement surgery as his specialty, he did so knowing that he could help provide a direct and often immediate effect on improving a patient’s condition. It also allowed him to connect with people in a valuable and long-lasting way. Dr. Zarin finds that the best part of practicing medicine is when he has performed a joint replacement for a patient that has gone from having daily incapacitating pain to someone who is pain free, functional, and happy with their quality of life. He truly enjoys seeing those patients over the years and to follow how their lives have improved. Having helped someone to regain their quality of life and function is the most gratifying part of his practice.

Throughout his education and career Dr. Zarin has been recognized with high honors and awards. While at Stanford Medical School he received the Medical Scholars Award for Research. He was the Administrative Chief Resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. He received the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Career Development Research Grant in 2009. The Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates honored him with the Diamond Award for Clinical Excellence in 2011. From 2009-2017 he was a selection for Best Doctors of America™ and from 2015-2019 he has been selected as a member of the Boston area Castle Connolly Americas Top Doctors™.

Dr. Zarin has continued to share his passion for orthopedic medicine through teaching medical students, residents, and fellows in Orthopedics and joint replacement. He has been affiliated with several institutions in the Boston area, including Boston University Medical Center, New England Baptist Orthopedic Hospital, Tufts University Medical School, and Tufts Medical Center. He continues his mission of medical education focused on MAKO robotic surgery for joint replacements through physician education at a national and regional level. Dr. Zarin will continue his teaching efforts at Providence Saint John’s with his surgical practice of robotic assisted surgery. He will also continue to be involved in the development of the next generation of robotic assisted joint replacement surgery.

His major research interests are robotic assisted surgery for total joint replacement, mechanical alignment of total knee arthroplasty, outcomes in primary and revision total joint replacement, peri-operative considerations for total joint replacement and management of infections in total joint replacement.

When not helping patients improve their quality of life, he is most likely to be found enjoying time with his wife and children along with all their indoor and outdoor sports activities. A nice game of golf is also a favorite and relaxing outdoor activity for Dr. Zarin.
