About Shira Wachtel
Shira Wachtel received her bachelor's degree in psychology and linguistics from McGill University, and her Masters or Science in Communication Disorders and Sciences from California State University, Northridge. She completed her Clinical Fellowship at the VA in West LA and has been working as a speech-language pathologist at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center since 2011. Shira performs cognitive-linguistic and swallowing evaluations and treatment sessions with adolescents, adults, and geriatrics with a variety of patient populations including but not limited to sepsis, stroke, TBI, head and neck cancer, tracheostomy, and ventilator dependency. She conducts modified barium swallow studies (MBSS) and is certified in the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImp), 2016-present. She also earned a certification in McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP) in 2020. She also conducts Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES) competent, 2021-present. Shira utilizes evidence-based treatment tools including sEMG, Iowa Oral Pressure Instrument (IOPI), Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer (EMST), Threshold IMT, and Passy Muir Valve (PMV).
