About J. R. Sales

Dr. Sales is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with a focus on helping patients return to active, pain-free lives. For over 20 years, he has led improvements in minimally invasive spine surgery approaches. He currently serves as the Medical Director of Spine Surgery for Providence Health System in Oregon, helping guide care for patients across the state. Dr. Sales takes a conservative approach to treating spinal conditions and injuries. Dr. Sales and his team offer comprehensive treatment plans for patients. Often patients do not need surgery, and the team works closely with pain specialists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and naturopaths to help patients recover without surgery. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Sales offers minimally invasive spinal surgeries such as disc replacements, surgical decompressions, spinal cord stimulator implantation, and spinal fusion surgeries. Most patients return home within 24 hours, and many patients will be able to sleep in their own bed the night of surgery. Minimally invasive spine surgery has been shown to keep surgical infection rates low, decrease the time you spend in the hospital, and keep pain lower compared to open spine surgery. Dr. Sales earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation at Oregon Health & Science University. He chose to focus exclusively on spine surgery and completed a spine surgery fellowship at San Francisco Spine Institute. Outside of his practice, Dr. Sales enjoys hiking, skiing, and spending time with his wife and two children.
