About Alexi C. Matousek
Alexi C. Matousek, M.D., is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in lung and esophageal cancer and non-cancer diseases. Dr. Matousek specializes in those surgeries located within the chest including the lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, throat and airway. He also does general thoracic surgery, including minimally-invasive robotic surgery. Before moving to Spokane in 2019, Dr. Matousek completed residency and fellowship programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also attended the prestigious Paul E. Farmer Global Research Fellowship Program in Global Surgery and Social Change, a collaboration between Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Matousek has over 25 years’ experience working with communities in rural Haiti. It was Dr. Matousek’s early ties to Haiti that helped shape his medical career. At the age of nine, he and a younger brother went to Haiti the first time when their parents taught at a school geared to families of U.S. and European physicians. He’s published extensively on treating diseases of the esophagus, as well as issues related to providing surgical care to vulnerable populations. Dr. Matousek is fluent in English and Haitian Creole.

Dr. Matousek has interests in general thoracic surgery, including robotic surgery, surgery for the lung and esophageal cancer, benign esophageal diseases as well as infectious lung disease. He has over 25 years experience working in rural Haiti and has published on the impact of patient navigation and community health workers on surgical access for vulnerable populations. He enjoys basketball, guitar, obstacle based fitness and being outdoors with his wife and children.
