At Kadlec’s Coumadin Clinic, we help you manage any anticoagulant medications you take so you can stay as healthy as possible.

Because our specialized therapy is medically based, a physician’s order is required. Referrals can be made by calling Kadlec’s Anticoagulation Program at 509-942-2660. Many health insurance plans will pay for treatment. Your coverage will be based on your specific insurance plan. Please be sure to bring your insurance card with you.

Anticoagulation is the process of preventing clots from forming in the blood. Certain conditions require anticoagulant medications. Those conditions include:

  • Mechanical heart valves
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Previous deep vein thrombosis
  • Previous pulmonary embolism

The risk of cardiovascular blood clots is reduced by thinning the blood.

Warfarin (Coumadin) therapy is monitored by the use of blood samples to measure the Prothrombin time (PT) and International Normalized Ratio (INR). The INR is a ratio of the patient’s PT and a PT that is considered average for a patient not on anticoagulants. The target INR may be different for individual patients, depending on the reasons for taking warfarin. The blood tests will be taken on scheduled days. Initially, the PT/INR tests are scheduled more frequently, but as the therapy is adjusted the time between blood tests lengthens. The dose of warfarin is adjusted based on the results of the INR.
