Cardiogenic Shock
Our high performing cardiogenic shock team is nationally recognized for managing patients with a variety of circulatory support technologies as a bridge to recovery, durable ventricular assist device, or heart transplant. We treat about 400 cases of cardiogenic shock in our program annually.
- Acute heart failure
- Cardiogenic Shock
- Chronic heart failure
- Cardiomyopathy (post-partum, viral, ischemic, non-ischemic)
- Cardiac arrest
- Heart Failure
- Heart Attack
Cardiogenic shock is a life-threatening condition that happens suddenly when your heart can’t pump enough blood to keep up with your body’s demands. Cardiogenic Shock can be caused from a heart attack. Without oxygen, your cells can’t function, which could lead to organ failure and be fatal. This is an emergent situation and care is provided in the hospital setting.
The goal of the cardiogenic shock team is to help the heart regain its function with whatever means necessary. In a case where the heart is too injured for recovery, however, our team can evaluate the patient for either a heart transplant or LVAD.
Patients may benefit from one or more of these treatment options:
- Cardiovascular Medical Management
- ECMO - Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
- Advanced techniques in cardiovascular surgery
- Longterm ventricular assist devices and temporary mechanical circulatory support.
