Medical-forensic examinations are performed by forensic nurse examiners (FNEs), formerly referred to as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs). FNEs are registered nurses with specialized training who provide holistic medical-forensic services to patients of all ages in a safe environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
We understand how difficult it can be to choose to seek care after an assault. Your medical care is our priority and can be provided at any time. However, some treatment options are more time sensitive, so we welcome you to seek care or call us for more information as soon as you feel safe and comfortable doing so.
It’s completely alright if you’ve already showered. We can still swab for potential DNA evidence. In many cases, forensic evidence can be collected up to 120 hours (5 days) after an assault, whether you’ve showered or not.
Your comfort is our priority. While wait times in emergency departments can vary, be assured that sensitive cases of this nature are prioritized.
The length of your exam depends on several factors, including how much history you feel comfortable sharing, the extent of injuries and which services you’d like. Some exams may take several hours, and we’ll be with you every step of the way.
You have a right to medical care whether you report to law enforcement or not. Please be aware that healthcare workers are mandatory reporters, so some circumstances may require us to make a report to law enforcement on your behalf. These requirements and your options for reporting will be discussed with you during your visit.
Cost depends on a variety of factors, including nature of assault, the time elapsed since the assault, and where it occurred. Services may be covered by Oregon's Sexual Assault Victims' Emergency fund and Oregon's Crime Victims' Compensation Program.
