We currently have over 5000 nurses throughout our ambulatory clinics, hospitals, hospice, home care and other practice settings in Los Angeles County, and that number is growing daily.   • About the Transition into Practice (TIP) program

    We are pleased to announce that Providence St. Joseph Health Nursing Institute – Clinical Academy Residence program has recently been awarded accreditation with distinction, the highest recognition awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).

    The curriculum and experience created by our Clinical Academy team earned the full 3 year accreditation for practice transition programs. This means our nursing residency program for nurses with less than 12 months’ experience exceeds the global standards for preparing our nurses to transition to a new care setting. Our accredited residency focuses on preparing nurses to practice in the following settings:

    • Critical Care
    • Emergency Services
    • Perinatal (excluding NICU)
    • Medical Surgical
    • Telemetry

    Providence California Hospitals’ Clinical Academy TIP program has been thoughtfully created to support your career growth and advancement.

    • New Graduate RNs/ Resident:
      • The TIP Residency program is an exceptional professional development program designed to support your progression as a new graduate RN (Resident) from education to practice as you transition into your first professional nursing role.
      • Note: Newly graduated nurses (RNs) enter into practice only through the TIP Residency Program which is offered in the winter, spring, and late summer.
    • Experienced RNs/ Fellow:
    • The TIP Fellowship program is designed for your career advancement, through support for your transition into a new clinical practice specialty.

    Definitions

    • Nurse resident: Newly graduated RN; graduated within the last 18 months and who has fewer than 12 months of experience.
    • Nurse fellow: Experienced RN with more than 12 months of experience in the same practice setting.

    Providence nursing is committed to creating and maintaining an environment in which each resident and fellow is able to realize their maximum potential and contribute to the success of the nursing profession in caring for our patients, families, communities and each other.

  • Program features

    TIP program includes:

    • Core Common Curriculum for the Nurse Resident
    • Specialty Specific Curriculum blending both on-line and classroom based learning
    • A Preceptor supported clinical practicum
    • Clinical Simulation scenarios for skill acquisition
    • Ongoing evaluation and feedback

    TIP nurses are required to complete the full program as designed to include course work, preceptor based clinical emersion, and clinical simulation sessions. Rotation length may vary depending on the practice area specialty. TIP candidates are encouraged to work in the new practice specialty for 24 months following the completion of their TIP program before they seek to apply for transfer to a new practice specialty.

    Length of programs vary based on the complexity of the specialty and the needs of each resident or fellow. Programs can range from several weeks to several months in duration.

    Note: Newly graduated nurses (RNs) enter into practice only through the TIP Residency Program which is offered in the winter, spring, and late summer.

    Residents and Fellows are expected to:

    • Travel within the Southern California region:
      During the TIP program, Residents and Fellows are required to travel within the Providence Southern California region to obtain the full educational program.
    • Work a varying schedule:
      Residents and Fellows are required to work the schedule of their Preceptor(s) in order to best gain clinical and workflow skills.
      During the program, schedules will vary based on the progression within the program and specialty, primarily working 36-40 hrs. each week for the duration of the precepted clinical time.

  • TIP program objectives

    The Transition into Practice (TIP) Nurse Residency and Fellowship programs emphasize interprofessional, collaborative, patient-centered care. TIP nurses will gain:

    • Clinical coaching in a Preceptor-led environment, building practice-based clinical skills and professional practice development in a defined practice setting caring for a unique patient population
    • Effective patient and family care focused communication skills
      Advanced knowledge in evidence-based nursing practice
    • Hands-on experience with Quality and Safety Education Nursing (QSEN) based curriculum
    • Providence nurses play an integral role in a variety of practice settings as part of Providence’s patient-centered practice model. Interprofessional team-based professional practice partnerships are foundational in our approach to caring for those we serve.

Program start time and application processes

The TIP programs are typically offered three times per year: winter, spring, and fall. We encourage you to check this site periodically for updated program information and open application acceptance dates.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing
  • Active California RN license in good standing – you may apply if you are unlicensed but must have your CA license prior to your start date
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers (AHA) – (BLS Provider), American Red Cross (ACR) – (BLS for Health Care Provider), or Military Training Network (MTN) – (Healthcare Provider)
  • Strong priority will be given to BSN and MSN prepared candidates
  • ACLS and other unit specific certifications are preferred at hire but may be required within 180 days of hire depending on the unit

    • What is required to be considered for the Transition into Practice (TIP) RN Residency & Fellow Program?

      The following are required:

      • Completing an online application by the published deadline
      • Current California RN license, in good standing prior to start date
      • Current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification
      • Current resume
      • 3 letters of recommendation:
        • 1 from a clinical instructor on school letterhead (Residents only)
        • 1 from a previous &/or current employer
        • 1 personal reference
      • Letter of intent which includes why you are interested in Providence Health & Services, the values you will bring to the organization and how our program will help further your professional career and goals
    • Do I have to have my RN license to apply to the TIP Nurse Residency program?

      Applicants may apply and be interviewed before they obtain an RN license. It will be necessary to have successfully completed the NCLEX examination and have an active California license to begin working.

    • Do I have to have a BSN/MSN in order to apply to the TIP Nurse Residency and or Fellow programs?

      ADN RNs are welcome to apply, however first consideration will be given to BSN, MSN and BSN in progress.

    • I graduated from nursing school more than 1 year ago, will I be considered for the TIP program?

      Yes, you may be considered.

    • I am an RN but have not worked for over 3 years, can I be considered for the TIP Program?

      It is not likely that you will be considered unless you have taken an RN refresher courses.

    • I have worked at another acute hospital for 6 months, can I be considered?

      Yes, but you will need to meet the same requirements as the new graduate RN.

    • I have been working at a SNF/Home Health/Hospice/Ambulatory setting for 1 year, can I be considered for the TIP program?

      Yes, you may be considered.

    • How often do you offer the TIP RN Residency & Fellow Program?

      At this time we offer the TIP Program for new graduate RNs (Resident) and experienced RNs (Fellow) 3 times each year.

    • What units/areas/specialties offer the TIP Program?

      The majority of the openings are in Telemetry or Med/Surg. The areas can vary depending on the needs at that time, but typically the program is offered in:

      • Med/Surg
      • Telemetry
      • Critical Care
      • Emergency
      • Women’s & Children’s
      • Perioperative
      • Transitional Care
      • Hospice
      • Sub-Acute
    • Can I choose the area of practice I want?

      The application will ask you to indicate your first and second choice areas. We do make an effort to accommodate preferences.

    • How long is the TIP Program?

      TIP programs range from 8 weeks to 30 weeks, depending on the complexity of the practice specialty.

    • When will I be contacted for an interview?

      We receive hundreds of applications for our TIP RN Residency & Fellow Program. Although we review applications for those who meet our minimum requirements, we are not able to personally contact those who are not moving forward in the selection process. You can always log in to your application profile to view the status of your application.
