Accredited by the American College of Radiology, our Radiation Oncology practice at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s Disney Family Cancer Center provides an integrated approach to cancer treatment. Designed for optimal patient care, comfort and convenience, our facility is fully equipped with the most leading–edge technology to treat cancer in the San Fernando Valley and the Verdugos.
Cancer Support Services
In addition to screenings and support services, our department features innovative and advanced cancer treatment techniques that allow for highly focused, precise radiation while minimizing the effects on surrounding healthy tissue. This approach helps target tumors directly while minimizing the adverse effects of radiation.
Our treatments include:
- Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRS)
- Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT)
- Intensity–Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
- Image–Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT)
- Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)
- 3–D conformal radiotherapy
- Electron Treatment
Our cancer care team is focused on delivering comprehensive cancer care in a compassionate and healing environment. From advanced diagnostics to individualized treatment programs, our team of board-certified radiation oncologists provide care for:
- Brain and spinal cord cancer
- Breast cancer
- Gastrointestinal cancer
- Genitourinary cancer
- Gynecologic cancer
- Head and neck cancer
- Hematologic cancer
- Skin cancer
- Thoracic and lung cancer

People Focused Healthcare – The Ambient Experience
The Ambient Experience, part of the radiation oncology department at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center, is based on years of clinical design research. It enables us to create an entire environment designed around our patients and staff in order to improve the experience of patients during radiation consultation, simulation, and treatment.
Creating the Right Environment
The Ambient Experience integrates architecture and technology (e.g. lighting, sound, vision) using a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) card to create spaces that the patient can personalize. This puts patients at ease. "The Ambient Experience helps our patients feel like they're more in control of their treatment – and that's the kind of empowerment we want to give our patients." – Tamara Sutton, Service Area Director, Oncology Services.
The patient's first contact with the Ambient Experience is the wireless touch screen in the radiation simulation room. The patient chooses a theme or color before entering the simulation room. This theme or color then fills the simulation room to create a pleasant environment and beautiful imagery on the ceiling and walls to focus on during the radiation simulation. It is friendly and accessible and gives patients the feeling of being an active participant in the procedure. The experience is made even more multisensorial by the accompanying music for each theme.
The examination rooms are also complemented by colored lighting, which illuminates the environment, as well as music. The architectural elements of the examination rooms have been designed to incorporate storage solutions that give the examination room a clean and uncluttered feel. Together, all of these components contribute to an overall feeling of calm.
Radiation Treatment Room
The radiation treatment room also incorporates the Ambient Experience design. The room itself is ergonomically designed to facilitate the workflow, improve throughput and enhance the environment for staff and patients.
