Spider veins are a common vein condition caused by broken blood vessels, called capillaries. They appear on the surface of the skin and appear web-like and are typically red, blue or purple in color.
Spider veins form when one-way valves in the blood vessels no longer work properly, causing blood to clot instead of flowing back to the heart. While spider veins aren’t harmful, they can cause burning or itching and may make some people feel self-conscious.
Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging and twisted veins that are often darker in color than spider veins. They're typically close to the surface of the skin and are caused by valves within veins that are deeper in the leg. These valves may no longer function normally, resulting in blood pooling when calf muscles relax. This causes the veins to widen, making them more visible and uncomfortable. Varicose veins can be caused by injury, age, genetics, blood clot or other factors.
Symptoms may include pain, fatigue, heaviness, aching, burning, throbbing, itching or swelling in your legs. If left untreated, varicose veins can worsen over time.
Spider veins and varicose veins can affect women and men of any age, but they're most common in women who are of childbearing age or older.
Treatments typically cause minimal discomfort, most people can walk immediately after the procedure and resume their normal activities the same day – except for heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for about one week, or as directed by their doctor.
All procedures are performed in our clinics as outpatient visits. Providence Vein Center has three convenient locations in North Spokane, South Hill and Spokane Valley.
Many patients notice immediate relief of symptoms, such as reduced pain, minimized leg heaviness and reduced fatigue. The full benefits of the procedure may take 1–2 weeks. Individual results may vary.
While we treat varicose and spider veins year-round, many patients seek treatment during the fall and winter months. This minimizes sun exposure to the treated area and allows enough time for healing before warmer months.
