Providence signs on entrepreneurs-in-residence to expand the reach of DexCare, a digital health platform
SEATTLE, WA, September 9, 2020—Today, Providence is announcing the appointment of two key executives, Derek Streat and Sean O’Connor, as Entrepreneurs-In-Residence within the Digital Innovation Group. The pair will lead the further development and a future spinout of DexCare, an access optimization platform that orchestrates health system capacity and digital demand across all modes and lines of care. Their work will help assure broad availability of this internally developed technology to other health systems, furthering Providence’s vision of Health for a Better World.
Derek Streat is an accomplished healthcare technology entrepreneur and executive, having co-founded and/or been at the earliest stages of five venture-backed companies including C-SATS (acquired by Johnson & Johnson), Classmates (acquired by United Online), Medify (acquired by Alliance Health Networks) and AdReady (acquired by CPXi). Prior to joining the Providence team, Streat served as Vice President of Digital Solutions at Johnson & Johnson, a role he assumed after C-SATS was acquired by the brand. There he led the transformation of the organization responsible for training 250,000 surgeons worldwide into a leading healthcare quality improvement and continuous learning institution that directly advances patient outcomes, provider efficiency, and health system value through digital solutions.
Sean O’Connor previously partnered with Streat at C-SATS where he was a founding member of the commercialization organization, successfully developing and executing a SaaS-based business model that made C-SATS one of the most successful surgical quality tools on the market. O’Connor began his healthcare journey at Intuitive Surgical. During his 10-year career at the organization, he held various leadership roles within the commercial organization and was a key member in making Intuitive one of the most successful medical device companies in the world.
DexCare was developed as the platform for Providence’s same-day care business where it has been driving high value patient acquisition for the organization since 2016. In the wake of COVID-19, nearly all care venues became digital, increasing the complexity of care access. At Providence, DexCare is helping the organization digitally acquire new patients, navigate them to the most appropriate care setting, as well as optimize internal clinical resources to provide care. During COVID-19, the platform scaled to meet a 30X increase in patient visit volume, allowing Providence to seamlessly shift resources between in-clinic to telehealth visits getting patients the care they needed at a critical time. Over the past few months, DexCare’s use cases have expanded into other care venues at Providence and the SaaS platform has been deployed at other health systems to assist them in their response and recovery.

This will be the third platform incubated and then spun off by Providence’s Digital Innovation Group. The last Entrepreneurs-in-Residence were former Swype executives Mike McSherry and Aaron Sheedy, who subsequently led Xealth, a digital health company incubated at Providence. Since the spinout, Xealth has been named to Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list three years running and was most recently named to CB Insights Digital 150. Xealth recently announced a strategic investment by and commercial partnership with Cerner furthering the company’s momentum.
