Genetic testing for breast cancer -- know your risk.

Genetic testing for breast cancer -- know your risk.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This Breast Cancer Awareness month do more than wear pink. Schedule genetic testing.

Every October we unite around the Pink Ribbon to offer support for breast cancer awareness, research, and programs. Now you can do more in this fight against breast cancer through genetic testing.

“Genetic testing and counseling provide information and guidance to help people understand their risk for hereditary conditions, including specific cancers,” says Joy Varady, ARNP and genetics counselor. “Having this knowledge can assist in making informed medical decisions which include increased screening to detect an early cancer, medications that decrease risk of cancer and options for risk reducing surgery.”

The expanded Providence Regional Cancer Partnership genetic testing program tests for breast cancer genes and offers genetic testing for a broader range of cancers. The Cancer Partnership’s Cancer Genetics program can help assess risk for various types of cancer including pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, and others.

Joy Varady, ARNP, Genetic Counselor

“Our genetic testing team consults with people who have a family history of cancer, even if they have not developed cancer themselves, to aid in planning, screening, and prevention,” says Varady. “Because of COVID-19, many genetic counselor appointments are available virtually, with in-clinic blood draw or in-home saliva sample collection.”

Genetic testing is covered by most insurances. If you do not meet your insurance company’s criteria for testing, it is now available for only $250. If you have a family history of cancer, please make an appointment for genetic testing and counseling by calling the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership at 425-297-6850.
