Providence’s Mission calls us to help others, especially the poor and vulnerable. Providing direct health care to patients is what many of us immediately think about when it comes to how Providence helps others, but there are so many additional ways that we care for and support people in our communities.

Every year, we hold ourselves accountable for reporting where and how we have provided community benefit throughout our family of organizations. Our Providence Community Benefit Report also tells our stories of service. You can view the full 2021 annual report on Providence’s website.

Here in Oregon, I am proud that the total amount of community benefit Providence provided in 2021 was $315 million. This includes

  1. Free and low-cost care.
  2. Shortfalls in Medicare and Medicaid (where our costs to deliver care are higher than reimbursements).
  3. Community health services.
  4. Education and research.
  5. Subsidized health services.

I hope you’ll take some time to look at this year’s Oregon community benefit report. It includes an inspiring story of how our support has benefited Better Outcomes thru Bridges (BOB), a collection of programs that are integrated to serve poor and vulnerable people. Often these individuals struggle with physical and behavioral health challenges, as well as housing insecurity or homelessness. Our caregivers in this program work with integrity and compassion, while honoring the dignity of each person we serve. This is just one of many organizations that Providence’s community benefit funding supports.

For more than 165 years, Providence has invested in improving community health throughout Oregon. Our efforts are truly making a real difference in the lives of others. None of this would be possible without the dedication, professionalism and compassion of our caregivers, as they cared for our patients, our communities and each other.
