Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance named as only high-performing maternity care hospital in South Bay

Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance was the only South Bay hospital to earn recognition from U.S. News & World Report for high performance in maternity care.

The annual evaluation, among the publication’s newest specialty performance ratings, is designed to assist expectant parents and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care. The High Performing designation is measured by factors such complication rates among newborns.

“Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance is honored to be named the only high performing maternity care hospital in the South Bay. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our caregivers, physicians, and volunteers, who bring new life to the South Bay each day,” said Garry Olney, chief executive of Providence Little Company of Mary. “It is our mission to provide new families with all the services they need for a memorable birth, which is why we offer a doula program and midwifery services for our patients. With over 2,600 babies born at our medical center this past year, we are humbled that the community trusted us to provide their families with compassionate, world-class maternity care.”

“Maternity care is a core specialty at most hospitals, and we are so honored to be recognized among the best for the exemplary care we provide to the growing families in our community.” said Kevin Manemann, chief executive, Providence South Division.

U.S. News evaluated nearly 650 hospitals that provide high-quality labor and delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies for its 2022-23 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. Fewer than half of all hospitals that offer maternity care and participated in the survey received a High Performing designation.

“When expectant parents are considering their options for welcoming a baby to the world, the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care are designed to help them identify hospitals that excel in delivering babies for uncomplicated pregnancies,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “A hospital that has earned a High Performing designation may be a good option for parents, in consultation with their medical provider, to consider.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates and vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) rates, among other measures.
