Considering Joint Replacement?

With today’s advancements in surgical techniques and technology, joint replacement is safer and more effective than ever. Many of our patients return to activities they thought they couldn’t enjoy again, it’s our goal to help you do the same.

We’re invested in your health. Our board-certified surgeons use minimally invasive techniques that help reduce your pain, improve mobility and assist with a faster recovery. From pre-surgery education to post-surgical rehabilitation, we ensure that you feel informed and cared for during every stage of your recovery.

Joint pain shouldn’t interfere in your daily life. When you’re ready to consider joint replacement surgery, our team of experts are here to discuss all aspects of surgery with you.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals
  • Pre-surgery education to help you prepare
  • Post-op rehabilitation to improve strength and mobility
  • Ongoing follow-up care during your recovery

  • Partial: This type of procedure is a more targeted approach towards the specific damaged portions of your joint. With a partial replacement, we try to preserve as much of the healthy tissue as possible, so your movements are more natural.
  • Total: A total joint replacement is where we remove the damaged bone and replace it with a prosthetic joint. The new joint, coupled with any preserved healthy bone, ligaments and tissue, will help restore your mobility.

Robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery offers a cutting-edge approach that enhances a surgeon’s precision and greatly reduces your recovery time.

This state-of-the-art technology provides our surgical team with a 3D anatomical scan of your joint’s immediate area. This allows the surgeon to plan the most optimal joint replacement implant location prior to the surgery.

Key benefits of robotic surgery include:

  • Faster recovery
  • Minimal scarring
  • Reduced pain
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions

With the ability to customize surgery to your unique anatomy, robotic-assisted surgeries help provide the best possible outcome so you can get back to moving pain-free.

Doctors will typically recommend non-surgical treatments first, such as bracing, injections, medications or physical therapy.

If those haven’t brought you relief, you might be a good candidate for surgery if you’re still experiencing:

  • Limited mobility, from arthritis or joint deterioration
  • Pain during rest or sleep
  • Persistent pain that’s interfering with your daily life

Unmatched Patient Support

Our main goal during your recovery process is to help you return to an active daily life as quickly and comfortably as possible. This is where our high level of patient education and support make a big difference.

All patients receive an education guide with step-by-step information on what to expect before, during and after surgery, including home exercises. We have multiple resources and programs to empower and educate patients before their surgery.

Our pre-surgery classes are taught by members of our expert orthopedic care team, and may include physical and occupational therapists and nurses. A health “coach”, often a family member or friend, is a key element to your success and recovery and is encouraged to participate in the pre-surgery education with you.

Research has shown that patients who are better prepared for surgery tend to be discharged sooner and are more prepared to return home.

From the moment you enter our hospital, you will be cared for by our specially trained orthopedic team. This includes a surgical support team that works alongside your surgeon, postoperative nurses and inpatient physical therapists.

Physical and occupational therapy will be an integral and active part of your recovery in the hospital. Our therapists will teach you how to safely walk, climb stairs and participate in your daily activities. In most cases, therapy will begin in the hospital on the day of your surgery.

At Providence, you have an entire team of orthopedic experts helping you through treatment. From pre-surgery education to post-surgery physical therapy, we will be with you every step of the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your orthopedic specialist may recommend joint replacement surgery if:

  • Joint pain is ongoing and severe
  • Nonsurgical treatments, such as physical therapy, medications or injections, no longer provide relief
  • Pain makes it difficult to walk, sleep, complete daily activities or enjoy the things you love

Your clinician will review your symptoms, imaging results and overall health to determine whether surgery may be right for you.

Yes. Many people find relief through non-surgical treatments before considering surgery. Depending on your condition, these options may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Bracing or activity modifications
  • Injections, such as cortisone or other therapies
  • Physical therapy
  • Weight management, when appropriate

For some patients, these treatments can reduce symptoms enough to delay or even avoid surgery.

Your care team will guide you through every step of preparation before surgery. You may attend patient education classes, complete pre-operative assessments and receive guidance on exercises, recovery planning and preparing your home for a safe recovery.

Being well prepared can help you feel more confident about your procedure and recovery.

Recovery is different for every patient and depends on the joint being treated, your overall health and the type of procedure performed.

From pre-surgery education through rehabilitation, your care team will work closely with you to support healing, improve mobility and help you return to daily activities safely and comfortably.

Many Providence orthopedic programs offer robotic-assisted technology for joint replacement procedures. Robotic-assisted surgery can provide greater precision during the procedure and may offer benefits, such as:

  • Faster recovery for some patients
  • Less disruption to surrounding tissue
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions

Your surgeon will determine whether robotic-assisted surgery is appropriate for you.
