About Samuel R. Matz
Dr. Matz served in the US Navy as an enlisted nuclear reactor electrician and submarine navy diver aboard a fast-attack submarine. The military was a vast learning opportunity, not least of which was the value of respect, self-reliance, and appreciation for fresh air. After an honorable discharge from the service, he used my engineering degree at a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant that specialized in cancer treatments. This also later sparked his interest in biology and the biosciences. He completed his residency training in Billings, Montana and came to Missoula for the incredible and passionate people that live here and the access to truly world-class outdoor opportunities. Dr. Matz is an active Wilderness Medicine Society member and has a certification as a Wilderness EMT. Dr. Matz believes that it is his job to provide my patients with all reasonable treatment options, along with his reasoning, as the ultimate decision about how to take care of your health is your own. When not in the clinic, you can find him hiking and biking the local trails, kite surfing when the wind is cooperative, and hitting the slopes in the winter. He also enjoys tinkering in the garage and is fascinated with 3D printing and digital fabrication.

I very much appreciate Dr. Matz and the nurses and other staff in the office. Dr. Matz is very knowledgeable and although I know he's very busy, he takes time to talk with and listen to me. I've been a patient of this office for years and only one other (NP, I believe) made me feel more seen and heard than Dr. Matz does. He puts me at ease and I feel like he cares about me.

Dr. Matz is a good doctor and helped me as best he could within the time-frame available to us. I could tell he was rushed and I think that is a symptom of Providence policy versus an issue with Dr. Matz. It was great working with someone who knows more current reaearch and what treatments are available for things I deal with. I feel he could slow down on how fast he talks. It was hard to follow sometimes but I was able to sift through what he said by the end of our appointment. He prescribed several things I wasn't expecting to be submitted to my pharmacy and I will decide what I want to do with that. I am most concerned with an Rx that I already have been on, and is working, but it is out of refills. I'm not sure If It's been sent. Think this office seems to be VERY busy compared to others and everyone seemed stressed and rushed that day. (They remained professional, throughout.) I am weighing the decision to remain here or go back to my previous Gp's office, just with a different doctor. (Previous doc resigned.) I will have to reach out to Dr. Matz again regarding my existing prescription either way and will see how it goes. Dr. Matz is good, but he needs more time to actually help his patients. Patients shouldn't be treated like cattle being forced through a chute as quickly as possible. That is Providence policy, not Dr. Matz choice.

Dr. Matz was fantastic. The providers in this office seem to come and go often so hopefully he stays. Good bedside manner, good repour with other staff - he seems to respect them and vice versa.
