James B. Chen, MD

James B. Chen, MD is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstructive surgery and total joint replacement of the hip and knee, including primary and revision joint replacement. He has expertise in minimally invasive techniques, partial knee replacement, direct anterior and posterior hip replacement, computer-assisted navigation, and robotic joint replacement. His goal is to provide rapid-recovery and personalized care for his patients through the use of effective and current treatment options. Dr. Chen grew up in Irvine, CA. He completed his undergraduate education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he received numerous leadership and academic all-American awards participating in NCAA Division I football, in addition to graduating Cum Laude in Microbiology. He received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he received scholarships for his work in global health and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society as class president. He stayed at UCLA for his Orthopedic Surgery residency where he gained recognition as consultant of the year and was elected Chief Resident during his final year. Following residency, he completed his subspecialty training at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), which has been ranked the #1 Orthopedic Hospital in the nation by US News and World Report for 13 consecutive years and #1 in the world by Newsweek. At HSS, Dr. Chen had the opportunity to work with many world-renowned specialists in hip and knee reconstruction and was awarded the fellowship Clinical Excellence Award. Dr. Chen has published extensively in orthopedic surgery. He has authored textbook chapters, in addition to peer-reviewed articles in several leading orthopedic journals. Dr. Chen has presented his work at regional and national conferences. He remains an active candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Dr. Chen is excited to serve the medical needs of his home community. He enjoys spending his spare time with his wife and young daughter in addition to staying active outdoors by hiking, biking, running, and surfing.
