Paso a Paso (Step by Step)

Paso a Paso offers preventative health information and support to the Latino community. The bilingual staff provides culturally sensitive health education and resource navigation through home visits, classes, and support groups. Clients and their families are supported in a nurturing atmosphere grounded in compassion and respect, where they are empowered to cultivate their independence while embracing and amplifying their unique strengths.

All of Paso a Paso’s services are confidential and free regardless of income, insurance, or documentation status. We facilitate referrals and access to information about the following topics and more:

  • Healthcare navigation and resources
  • Food Security and Nutrition Programs
  • Parent and family support services
  • Family Resource Center connections

Perinatal Program

Since its inception, Paso a Paso has offered childbirth education, lactation education and support, as well as postpartum support groups in Spanish, all of which are still available. Postpartum group sessions are held weekly, providing a safe space for new parents to learn, connect, and share. The rotating topics cover infant-family mental health and wellness, child safety and development, lactation, and community resources. Additionally, one-on-one visits are available to address the unique needs of each family.

Health Promotion

Paso a Paso provides preventative health and wellness education through various channels, including diabetes education, nutrition programs, health promotion activities, special topics and presentations and one-on-one support. All health education topics are delivered in Spanish and are tailored to be culturally sensitive and relevant.

Parent Support Groups

Parent groups and classes are offered in Spanish for parents to learn about child health and development, get answers to common questions around children’s safety and wellness, learn about resources, and find support from other parents. Parent resource groups are typically held weekly while support groups for dads and support groups for parents of children with intellectual disability or delay are held monthly. Community building activities and family field trips occur throughout the year, often in collaboration with various community partners.

Healthy Kids & Families

We prioritize access to healthcare and are dedicated to helping families find the most affordable health insurance plan for their needs, whether through Medi-Cal or other available government program, or with the assistance of a Covered California certified counselor. Our clients receive support not only to enroll in but also to stay updated with Medi-Cal and CalFresh recertifications. Additionally, for Providence patients, we offer assistance in submitting a Patient Financial Assistance application.

Certain low- and middle-income families may qualify for free tax preparation through our limited version of the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Financial wellness class series with additional information are presented throughout the year. Referrals, health care navigation, and VITA services are available in English, Spanish, or another language available through the language line.
