Frequently Asked Questions
Otolaryngologists, commonly called ENT specialists, are trained to diagnose and treat conditions and diseases that affect your ears, nose and throat. This includes your sinuses, larynx (voice box) and the surrounding areas.
You or your child might benefit from seeing an ENT specialist if you’re experiencing any of the following:
- Chronic pain in your ears, nose or throat
- Hearing loss
- Nasal blockages or polyps
- Neck or thyroid masses
- Recurring ear, sinus or throat infections
- Vertigo or balance concerns
There are three types of hearing loss:
- Conductive hearing loss affects the outer or middle ear, including the ear canal, eardrum, ossicles, or the airspace behind the eardrum. Common causes of conductive hearing loss include obstruction of the ear canal by wax accumulation, ear infections, bony growths, holes in the eardrum from injury or infection, diseases involving the middle ear bones and accumulation of fluid behind the eardrum.
- Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is a problem with the inner ear. There are many causes of sensorineural hearing loss, but the most common are the aging process and exposure to loud noise.
- Mixed hearing loss describes an impairment caused by both conductive and sensorineural problems.
Dizziness and balance problems can have many different causes. To better understand your symptoms, your doctor may recommend testing that evaluates how your inner ears and balance system are working.
Depending on your symptoms, testing may include:
- Balance assessments
- Eye movement testing
- Evaluation of your inner ear’s response to movement and sound

Hearing loss can affect children of all ages, including infants. If you have concerns about your child's hearing, speech or language development, a hearing evaluation may help identify whether additional care is needed.
Your child may benefit from a hearing evaluation if they have:
- Concerns raised during a hearing screening
- Delays in speech or language development
- Difficulty hearing or responding to sounds
- Frequent ear-related concerns
- Trouble understanding conversations
Our team uses age-appropriate testing to assess hearing in infants, children and adolescents. We’ll review the results with you and recommend next steps if additional care is needed.
Seeing an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist doesn’t automatically mean you’ll need surgery. Your provider will carefully evaluate your symptoms, discuss your concerns and recommend the treatment options that are right for you.
