If this is your first hospital visit, you probably have many concerns regarding your care - such as what to expect, who to ask questions of, and what is the best way to participate in your recovery. The following information should answer many of your questions and make you feel more comfortable about your hospitalization.

Our team of nurses, doctors, technologists, technicians, therapists, and support staff all share in the Providence tradition of caring. Together, we are dedicated to providing skills and services necessary to give you excellent, respectful care.

You are the key member of your healthcare team, and because of that we encourage you to become involved in your health care. Ask questions. Tell us your concerns, hopes, and needs related to your care, treatment, services or any patient safety issues. With your assistance, we can work toward our mutual goal - giving you excellent care in a supportive environment.

We do our best to make your stay a comfortable one. We have both private and double occupancy rooms, which are assigned depending on availability and your medical needs. If you would like a private room and one is not available at the beginning of your stay, we will make every effort to provide one as soon as possible.

If you have a private room, an adult may stay overnight with you. (Unfortunately, children may not spend the night). Please let us know as soon as possible if you will have someone rooming with you. Overnight guests are not allowed in semi-private rooms.

Important Phone Numbers

Make a healthy choice and be sure a Providence Medical Center is in-network with your health plan. Not all health plans or medical groups are contracted with all Providence hospitals.

A pre-admission appointment will help make your stay easier and less stressful. If your physician's office has not made a pre-admission appointment for you, please call 310-303-6140 and we will schedule one at your convenience. You will meet with a caring pre-admission nurse who will make sure everything is in order. Your doctor may also schedule routine medical tests such as laboratory tests or X-rays, before your hospitalization. However, other routine tests may be done on the day of your admission.

You may want to bring a family member or trusted friend to your pre-admission appointment. We can help answer questions you or they may have then.

Pre-registering for your hospital visit will prepare us for your arrival and save you time when you check into the hospital. To pre-register, please complete the online form linked below:

Please do not fill out the online form. Call the hospital directly during normal business hours to pre-register by phone. If you have a Monday appointment, you cannot pre-register online or by phone after 5 p.m. on Friday. You will be able to register when you come in for your Monday appointment.

At Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, we are dedicated to patient- and family-centered care. We understand that visits from family and loved ones are essential to our patients while they are in the hospital. We also recognize that their presence is important to the healing process. For this reason, we have adapted a generous and welcoming visitation philosophy. We do ask that you observe the daily visiting hours listed below, however if you need to make arrangements outside these hours please do so with the patient’s nurse.

  • Visiting hours are from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Children under the age of 18 are discouraged from visiting for their safety. Please note that exceptions are made for end-of-life situations and in our Women’s and Children’s units. Please chec with the nurses caring for your loved one for additional information.
  • We will make every attempt to accommodate visitors requested by our patients.
  • Individuals designated as a primary support person (PSP) are those who are providing the patient with significant physical, psychological or emotional support. Primary support persons are encouraged to visit the patient at any time (24 hours a day/7 days a week).

All visitors and PSPs who are in the medical center after 8 p.m. are required to wear an ID issued by Security. Nursing professionals can help visitors and PSP secure appropriate identification.

Parking

Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance offers complimentary parking at our facility. The main parking lot is located on the East side of the building and we have complimentary valet parking at the main entrance.

Non-English Speaking and Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals

Language interpreters for those who speak English less than very well are provided at no charge. This service is available to patients and their companions during all business hours. Both over-the-phone interpreter services and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) are available. This technology provides quick access to remote ASL interpreters and to many languages and dialects.

At Providence, we support an individual’s right to choose the care they want. Our Ethical Directives of Catholic Healthcare call on us to respect the dignity of each person.

Advance Care Planning (ACP) encourages patients and families to talk about and document their care preferences in advance to ensure that the care they receive is aligned with their goals, values, and priorities. We have provided resources for you and your family to help you have the conversation and document your wishes in writing.

An advance health care directive lets your physician, family and friends know your healthcare preferences, including the types of special treatment you want or do not want at the end of life, your desire for diagnostic testing, surgical procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and organ donation. By considering your options early, you can ensure the quality of life that is important to you and avoid having your family make critical medical care decisions for you under stress or in emotional turmoil.

How to get started

The best time to start the conversation about the kind of care you’d want if you were in an accident or became seriously ill is now. The Institute for Human Caring is dedicated to engaging the community and health care providers in conversations about what matters and ensuring that our patient’s care preferences are honored. We can help you think about the care you’d want, talk to your loved ones about your decisions, choose your advocate and complete an advance directive.

Five Wishes serves as an Advance Directive and is a legally-valid tool available for your use. Five Wishes helps ensure your wishes, and those of your loved ones, will be respected-even if you cannot speak for yourself.

POLST (Physician Order for Life Sustaining Treatment)

Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) is a physician order that outlines a plan of care reflecting a patient’s wishes concerning care at life’s end. The POLST form is voluntary and is intended to:

  • Help you and your patient discuss and develop plans to reflect his or her wishes
  • Assist physicians, nurses, healthcare facilities, and emergency personnel in honoring a person’s wishes for life-sustaining treatment
