Pregnancy and childbirth are among the most special times for families. At Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center, our maternity services team supports you from the first days of your pregnancy to the birth of your baby and beyond. We get to know you by name, understand your needs and know how you want to have your baby.
We’re here for you every step of the way, with expert care delivered in a comfortable setting that puts you at ease. We understand the importance of having those you love around you, and we invite your family to become involved and help celebrate the birth of your baby.
Our physicians and obstetrical nurses are highly trained experts who love what they do, and it shows.
We offer our laboring moms a variety of alternative pain relief methods, such as birthing balls, hydrotherapy and aromatherapy oils. Our obstetrical nurses are ready to help coach moms through the labor process, and our certified registered nurse anesthetists are on call and readily available at all times.
We think of you and your newborn as a mother-baby team, and we encourage you to be together for all the important learning and bonding moments. All of your baby’s care, including the very first bath, is done at your bedside. We foster an environment that helps you bond with and learn how to care for your baby.
We provide the education and support you need to provide the best nutrition for your baby. Our certified lactation consultants, along with our experienced nurses and trained peer counselors, are available seven days a week to help with breastfeeding and bottle feeding.
All Kodiak families, whether their baby is born at PKIMC or off-island, have the opportunity to enroll in a free breastfeeding and infant nutrition support program called the Kodiak KINDNESS Project. KINDNESS provides services throughout your baby’s entire first year. Call 907-539-2660 for more information on this program, which is only available in Kodiak.
We also provide personalized prenatal classes. These classes help women and their families prepare for this special time in their lives. Each class is taught by a PKIMC obstetrical nurse, which gives expectant moms the opportunity to get to know our staff before they have their baby. This class is free to all families.
This clinic provides additional support services with specialists in pediatrics, gynecology and other areas.
Our providers are dedicated to providing personalized care for each mom, infant and family. Our facility supports these goals with the following resources.
With soft lighting, comfortable furniture and large picture windows, our family birthing suites provide a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel more like you’re at home than in a hospital. Each suite has a private bathroom and shower, a personal sink and vanity, a closet and a TV. We also provide a sleeper-recliner so your support person can stay overnight and a nutrition station, which offers beverages, ice and light snacks, available 24 hours a day.
We encourage you to visit one of our suites. To do this, please call 907-486-9500 and ask to speak with the third-floor charge nurse of the obstetrical nurse.
When it’s time for your baby’s delivery, your suite can be converted into a delivery room with leading-edge technology within seconds.
The entire obstetrical unit, including the nursery, has discreet but strict security measures to ensure that babies and moms are safe and secure.
Each member of your care team has the skills and experience to give you the best possible care. Our exceptional nursing staff is cross trained in all aspects of labor, delivery, postpartum and infant care. This means the same nurse can care for you and your baby, providing an important continuity of care.
