Our Approach

Providence's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, located in Medford Oregon, offers a professionally supervised exercise and education program for patients who have had any of the following (a referral from the patient's primary physician is required to participate):

  • Heart attack
  • Coronary bypass surgery
  • Angioplasty
  • Coronary stent
  • Valve surgery
  • Stable angina
  • Heart transplant or heart-lung transplant

A board-certified cardiologist serves as medical director and supervises our program, which is backed by Providence Heart Institute, the largest provider of cardiovascular services in Oregon and one of the nation's premier cardiovascular centers.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

You’ll start the cardiac rehabilitation program shortly after your hospital stay to focus on helping you safely rebuild strength, improve heart health and make lasting lifestyle changes.

Most patients begin cardiac rehabilitation one to two weeks after leaving the hospital. The program typically lasts 8 to 12 weeks, depending on your care plan and progress.

Cardiac rehabilitation starts with a comprehensive health assessment. This helps your care team understand your current condition and create a personalized plan tailored to your needs.

You’ll participate in a professionally supervised exercise program designed just for you. Activities may include treadmills, stationary bikes, hand weights and other equipment in our rehab gym.

During exercise, you’ll wear a wireless cardiac monitor so our team can track how your heart responds and ensure your safety.

Appointments are 60 or 90 minutes, depending on your preference and care plan. Each visit includes:

  • Pre- and post-exercise safety checks
  • Warm-up exercises
  • Aerobic activity
  • Strength training
  • Cool-down and stretching

All activities are tailored to your health condition and goals.

Education is a key part of your recovery. You’ll participate in group classes and one-on-one consultations focused on building heart-healthy habits. Topics may include:

  • How your heart works
  • Safe exercise guidance
  • Nutrition and healthy eating
  • Medications
  • Blood pressure management
  • Weight management
  • Smoking cessation
  • Stress management

We offer a customized rehabilitation program for people with peripheral arterial disease. Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes, and classes are held alongside cardiac rehabilitation sessions.

For patients ready for a more intensive option, our accelerated program offers 90-minute sessions with longer, more challenging workouts. This may be a good fit if you:

  • Want to build endurance more quickly
  • Have work or hobby goals that require higher stamina
  • Need longer sessions due to travel or scheduling needs
